In less than three years, Parent Revolution has established an impressive track record of creating successful kids-first change by empowering parents.

Passed California's historic Parent Trigger law

In December 2009, less than a year after launch of Parent Revolution, the California state legislature passed the first-ever Parent Trigger law, a law conceived of and written by Parent Revolution.  Parent Trigger gives parents - for the first time ever - historic power to transform their children's failing schools based on the needs of their children, not adults.  To learn more about how we passed the California Parent Trigger, click here.

Organized the first Parent Trigger campaign with the parents of McKinley Elementary School

On December 7, 2010,  the parents of McKinley Elementary in Compton, CA made history as the first parents to ever successfully use the Parent Trigger law, submitting signatures from over 61% of their school demanding its transformation.  Parent Revolution was deeply involved in the parents' successful organizing efforts, helping them to build an organization called McKinley Parents for Change, form a steering committee, gather the necessary signatures, and then fight back when Compton Unified spent months trying to disenfranchise them by throwing out their petitions.  To learn more about the historic McKinley campaign, click here.

Passed pro-parent implementing regulations at the State Board of Education

Despite predictions of doom from political prognosticators across the state, parents organized a relentless advocacy campaign aimed at Governor Brown's State Board of Education, ultimately passing strong, comprehensive, and pro-parent regulations that will prohibit future districts from replicating Compton Unified's anti-parent tactics and enable parents to effectively use the Parent Trigger law for years to come.  To learn more about how parents were able to overcome powerful political forces to successfully pass the regulations, click here.

Spread Parent Trigger laws around the country

The parents of McKinley Elementary have inspired a parent empowerment movement that has spread across the country.  Both Mississippi and Texas have now passed Parent Trigger laws modeled on our law in California, and roughly 20 additional state legislatures have bills pending that would bring Parent Trigger to their state.  To learn more about how Parent Trigger and the parent empowerment movement is spreading around the country, click here.

Passed the Public School Choice Resolution

Parent Revolution, in partnership with other community organizations, was instrumental in helping to craft and pass LAUSD's groundbreaking Public School Choice Resolution, which allows groups of teachers, high-quality charter schools, and other non-profits to compete against the district to operate hundreds of district schools that are underperforming or newly constructed.  To learn more about our successful campaign to pass Public School Choice, click here.
