The Story of 24th Street Elementary School

On Thursday, January 17, more than 150 parents and children associated with the 24th Street Elementary School in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles delivered a "Parent Trigger" petition to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

This is the FIRST time the "Parent Trigger" process has been used in LAUSD, the second largest school district in the nation.

Move Follows Delivery of Petitions to Los Angeles Unified School District

Los Angeles, Calif. – January 18, 2013 – Just one day after delivering Parent Trigger petitions representing over 68% of their school to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent John Deasy, the 24th Street Elementary School Parents Union is moving quickly to formally solicit proposals to transform their school for the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

It’s official: 2013 is the year of parent power. Increasingly, the year signals a new paradigm of collaboration among parents and other key stakeholders for ensuring tangible, immediate, and positive change in failing schools.

A New Day (Part One)

It’s a new day for parents and children of 24th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles.

Yesterday, scores of concerned parents organized a rally and bus trip to LAUSD’s downtown office, where the parents delivered 359 petitions to turnaround their children’s failing school. Signed petitions represented 440 students (or 68% of students at the school).

Adelanto School Board Approves New School

Historic Victory in Adelanto!

Last night, Desert Trails Parents Union (DTPU) and nonprofit school operator LaVerne Elementary Preparatory Academy earned approval from the Adelanto School Board to form a new school to replace the struggling Desert Trails Elementary School. The Adelanto School Board's vote concludes a nearly two year-long campaign for change by DTPU.

LaVerne Prep earned a 911 API score last year; Desert Trails' score dropped to 699.

Viola Davis Nominated for NAACP Image Award

The holidays brought good news for Tony Award-winning actress Viola Davis: she received a nomination from the NAACP Image Awards for her performance in the movie “Won’t Back Down.”
