WHAT MAKES A GREAT SCHOOL?
Charter schools such as Green Dot and Alliance prove that great public schools ARE possible. They take the same students that are dropping out of LAUSD schools and send them to college.
These schools achieve these results spending the same amount of money per student. How? While they are all different, they all share three common factors which make them great schools.
1) More accountability
Everyone- teachers, principals, and students- is held accountable for their actions. Bad teachers are fired and replaced with better ones. Students are closely tracked by their teachers, and never fall through the cracks.
2) Parent Choice
These schools all put no more than 700 students on each campus, and let parents choose which school is best for their child.
3) Less Bureacracy
Less bureaucracy means more money for students in the classroom. 94% of Green Dot's funding goes directly into the classroom- for LAUSD, that number is only 60%.
There are many successful school models just here in LA. Alliance for College Ready Public Schools has a school model which achieves phenomenal results, while Green Dot schools embrace their Six Tenets to create their impressive results. The important thing to remember is that these methods are proven to work, and they can work anywhere. This isn't about charter schools- there is no reason any public school could not adopt methods like these and start sending 70, 80, 90% of their kids to college (instead of LAUSD's 11% rate). But LAUSD is designed for adults, not kids. And thats exactly why we need a Parent Revolution.
