Legislation to Empower Parents Welcomed by Parent Revolution and StudentsFirst Tennessee

NASHVILLE, TN- StudentsFirst Tennessee and Parent Revolution jointly welcomed legislation filed today by Representative John DeBerry (D- Memphis) and Senator Brian Kelsey (R- Germantown) that would give parents a stronger voice in determining the direction of their local schools.

The so-called "parent trigger" bill, HB 651/SB 600, would equip parents with the tools to take immediate and dramatic corrective action should they feel it necessary. Under the proposed law, at the request of a majority of parents, a struggling school would be subject to one of three options- a public charter conversion, turnaround strategies, or a transformation intervention.

StudentsFirst Tennessee Policy Director Daniel Zavala had this to say:

"When it comes to charting a path for our most educationally at-risk students attending struggling schools, no other body or organization can offer better direction than the community of parents and families. Day-in and day-out, these individuals bear firsthand witness to the frustrating consequences of chronically lagging student achievement and hold the clearest understanding of the needs of those students."

Parent Revolution Regional Advocacy Director April Popescu added the following:

"If local systems fail to deliver effective solutions for students, this policy would empower parents with the ability to force a transformation at the most essential level. Accordingly, this bill not only provides parents with an accountability mechanism, but also with a real voice in determining the best way forward for their zoned school."
